MODERN PARENT LIVING

MOJAPHOTO

It was only a matter of time before we launched a submissions feature dedicated to the many talented photographers we meet & collaborate with. We pretty much fall head over heels for sessions daily. Now, we get to share some of what we love with everyone, and this makes us very happy. Our first featured photographer is Melissa of MOJAPHOTO

Get ready to be swept away by this swoon-worthy session.

“Years from now, they can look at that photograph and see not just what they and their children looked like, but what it felt like to be part of that family.” -Melissa

Meet MOJAPHOTO.

From Melissa of MOJAPHOTO.

For parents, the most stressful part of a photo session is getting there. As the parent of two young children, I know first hand how much work goes into making sure the kids are fed, rested, clean, happy, and on time. As a photographer who relies on natural light, my biggest concern is the weather.

I take the same approach with every family I photograph. I photograph them the way they are, doing what comes naturally. Simply put, I photograph “what is”.  In this way, I am able to capture much more than a portrait of a child, but a particular moment in the life of that family. Years from now, they can look at that photograph and see not just what they and their children looked like, but what it felt like to be part of that family.

This particular session took place at the beautiful Lars Anderson Park in Brookline, MA. The park offers all the lovely backdrops of the Boston Public Garden, with its weeping willows and expansive lawn, without the crowds and parking headaches. This little one was so easy to work with because she was willing to let the scene unfold.  This doe eyed beauty was shy and going through a “stranger anxiety” phase. I kept my distance and let her begin to play and explore. Things were going so well, I extended our 15 minute mini session to 20 minutes.  The weeping willows would have been a gorgeous backdrop, but what was happening right where we were was wonderful – the setting was simple, the light was magnificent.

I have fourteen years of professional experience as a portrait photographer and a lifetime of experience dealing with children. Making them comfortable in the photo session and using the natural light to highlight their features and the unique features of the surroundings is my primary concern. I am obsessed with light and how it can bounce off a subject, illuminate an ocean or dance off leaves and grass. I get excited about each and every session.  I am eager to see what it will bring, how I can capture it and give it back to my client.
