Courtney Batting
Tell us about Batting – how did it begin?
Batting is one of a kind accent pillows from mostly re-used, re-purposed or vintage fabrics. I use what I can get basically. If I see an appealing patterns on an old dress or even a handbag I can visualize how it would work together on a pillow. I like the hunt for vintage or unique fabrics that are just being used in a different form. I began creating these pillows to use up all of the fabrics I collected over my years as a textile major. My mom is the one who suggested I start making pillow covers. As I began I didnʼt want them to be the basic solid pillow cover. I wanted them to stand out and really give that accent of color or pattern. There have been many variations over the years, and now I stick to the three panel pattern. To be honest they are so much fun to make and I enjoy it every time.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Inspiration for me comes from the fabric itself. If I get a really good batch of beautiful fabrics that just flow together naturally I can spend days in my studio coming up with different designs. The challenge of making the fabrics work together is also inspiration. Its like a puzzle with patterns, textures, and color.
Best designer moment so far?
Years ago I was at an art show, and a customer of mine came up to me with one of my pillows she purchased and said, “never stop making these, they are beautiful”. It meant a lot, and that one moment has kept me creating and designing. I like seeing people happy, and if something I created can do that then I will not stop.
Designer you’re most excited about right now?
Lotta Jansdotter has always been one of favorite designers. Her simple organic patterns have always caught my eye and inspired me. She captures beautiful simplicity in her designs and creates a happy vibe.
Describe your brand in three words? Modern, Retro, Comfort
Hot chocolate or cider? Hot chocolate – definitely.
Holiday Must-Have?
Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday of mine, probably because itʼs based on food, so Iʼm loving all of the baked goods that incorporate another baked good or candy inside of them. For instance an Oreo inside of a brownie….wow!
What are you most excited about in 2014?
Iʼm making some big career changes that will eventually allow me to focus more on my product as well as having another career in the creative field. Iʼm very much looking forward to putting more time into Batting and really working hard to eventually have it become my full time career.
