MODERN PARENT LIVING

Kristen’s Top Registry Picks

It’s one of the most important shopping lists you’ll ever create - The Baby Registry. For first time moms, the key is to find real deal must-haves out of an isle of way too options. Ultimately, we suggest you search out products that are true essentials, then add a few stylish things that borrow from your personal style.

As a self proclaimed minimalist, and limited shared living space with my two, soon to be three loves, less is definitely more. The amount of baby propaganda is overwhelming, and most of it unnecessary. Here are my top five picks for baby gear must-haves for the mama-to-be.”  -Kristen

Miracle Blanket: I bought this at the recommendation of a friend when I was 9 months pregnant, and had visions of sleepless nights and a colicky baby. You can never be too safe, right? It was one of the best investments we ever made. Perhaps my little would have been an amazing sleeper without this swaddler, but I wasn’t about to chance it. Unlike so many other swaddlers on the market, this thing wraps them so tight (in a good way), there is no unraveling, giving them the comfort and security they’re thriving for, especially in the early days when they’re used to being in tight quarters from their former home (your womb). My sweet girl was a rock star sleeper from day one, and second to a little bit of luck and being a sleep sergeant with her schedule, I credit the Miracle Blanket for some of that shut-eye.

Born Free Glass Bottles: While breast is most definitely best, there will come a time that your nursing baby is hungry and the milk factory is across town (or enjoying a well-deserved date night out). While most bottles are “BPA-free”, that doesn’t mean they cannot leach harmful chemicals into your liquid gold and your baby’s precious system. Second to the breast, glass is the safest method for storing and feeding your lovey. Born Free makes a stellar bottle that very closely mimics the breast experience, plus patented technology to help to reduce symptoms of colic.

Ergobaby Carrier: Baby-wearing is so en vogue, and for good reason. Not only does it free up the multi-tasking mama’s (or papa’s) hands, but it can lead to happier, more well-adjusted babies. After trying quite a few options when my now 3 year old was a just a babe, I fell in love with the Ergobaby. The comfort factor alone is worth every penny. It also allows for three different positions (front, side, and back), and can hold up to 45 pounds.

bumGenius Elemental All-in-One Organic Cloth Diapers: These are new on the scene since my lovey was in diapers, but Bumgenius is an amazing, high quality cloth diaper made by a company that stands by their produces. We used the bumGenius one size 3.0s (which are now vintage). I {heart} these for three reasons:

  1. All-in-one means no inserts to pull out, wash, and put back in. That means more snuggle time.
  2. One size means that you buy your set once, use them until potty-training has commenced, and then they are retired. Many cloth diapers come in sizes (like the disposables), so as your baby grows, so must your diaper stash (and your bank account). Let’s be honest, cloth diapers are pricey (but not nearly as pricey as disposables over the life of your child).
  3. Organic cotton that is super soft against baby’s skin. Conventionally-grown cotton has a lot of pesticides. Sticking with organic is the way to go to avoid exposure in the most sensitive of places.
BOB Revolution SE Jogging Stroller: As an active mama, who craves exercise for both the mental and physical benefits (not to mention fast-tracking the pre-baby body), a jogger is a must-have (even if you don’t run). After settling on a second-rate jogger/car seat combo with our #1, we quickly learned that you get what you pay for and upgraded to the BOB Revolution SE Jogger. It’s lightweight, stable, and super-easy to push. Got two? BOB makes a double jogger, the Duallie, for the growing familia. Both have car seat adapters with a handful of popular car seats that you can purchase separately so your infant can join you safely as you get your workout out.
