Color Crush with Mike Petrizzi
If you had the chance to talk hair color with an absolute industry guru, what would you ask? For us, it was pretty simple – how can we have the best hair possible – Every. Single. Day.
Not just on the days we find ourselves happily snug in our stylists chair with all their fancy bells & whistles – but everyday, because those count too. Lucky for MoPa, we had the to chance to chat up the amazing art director behind AgeBeautiful, and figured we get straight to it, and inquire on a few other things as well, like, who has the best celebrity hair color right now? Read on for all the glorious big hair details.
Meet Mike Petrizzi.
How did you find yourself in the hair color industry? Tell us about the AGEBeautiful process? Apparently I walked out of kindergarten and asked my mother why the lunch aide’s hair was so “crunchy” looking, due to her frosted highlights. Clearly, I had an eye early on.
Working with AGEBeautiful has been an incredible adventure. I was asked to be the colorist for the first print campaign and I remember having this feeling of “this isn’t your typical one off gig.” I knew this product was special, and that it was going to take off. After the first campaign launched, I became a liason between the beauty industry and the brand. I realize my thoughts were spot on – AgeBeautiful was taking off in a big way. When AGEBeautiful hit it’s third successful year, now known as the fastest selling haircolor at the largest beauty supply in the world, I was promoted to Art Director – a role I cherish.
One thing MoPas can do to have healthier, more beautiful hair? Become best friends with a stylist, or at least learn what you can from the professionals, and why they use certain products.
What to look for when purchasing over the counter hair color? Understand what you’re purchasing. If covering grey is your number one goal, reach for a neutral or natural shade (they are the best at killing those pesky, fast and furious greys). If you are looking to control unwanted reddish, orange or yellow tones, grab an ash based color. You want to grab a professional grade product, and to be honest, AGEBeautiful is the only one out there.
Number one misconception about at-home hair color? That it is inferior to what I use at my salon. AGEBeautiful is better at dealing with grey coverage and aging hair than Wella Koleston or Redken Fusion. Not only is that horrific grey gone but you also plump it up, give it sheen, make it easier for a comb to go through it and remixes that wiry grey hair into a soft, before it ever turned on you, texture.
Favorite celebrity color right now? I’m a bit obsessed with my buddy (and fellow co worker) George Papanikolas’ latest work – he has transformed not only Kim, but Khloe Kardashian into the star that she is meant to be. Who doesn’t love Khloe? And George!?
