MODERN PARENT LIVING

Modern Mom – Tara Winterhalter

Even though Tara and I have only met twice, I feel like I’ve known her forever. You know how it goes… a friend goes on and on all about her amazing friend who recently had a baby, and just how wonderful, precious and awesome new mom and baby are. Honestly, it’s easy to see what all the gushing was about… Meet Tara; she is creative, an entrepreneur, has effortless personal style, and yes, she’s mom to sweet baby girl, Charlotte. It was a great afternoon with Tara – not only is she energetic, and beautiful, but her sweet stylish ways radiated throughout her dance studio.

Meet Tara Winterhalter of Motion Dance Studio in Dartmouth, MA.

What does a typical day in the life consist of? Our typical day is filled with an early morning wake up, a lot of hide and seek, and of course dancing around the house to a mixture of music from Lady Gaga to Kids Bop. After a nap, we both enjoy chicken nuggets together, then it is off to the dance studio for mommy.

Tell us about “Motion” and the inspiration behind it? I started dancing when I was 4 years old. It’s always been a dream of mine to train myself, not only as a dancer, but as a choreographer. I started working and teaching in high school and just kept freelancing until I was able to open a studio of my own. The name “Motion” was chosen simply because I wanted something simple. Knowing all the various styles of dance, I didn’t want to focus on one specific genre, so “Motion” to me, best represented all styles of performance art.

Aside of dance, what are some of the other things you’re passionate about? I am really passionate about yoga. I started with hip-hop yoga at HOPE yoga studio in Dartmouth.  It’s become a good addiction for me. I feel like it helps to keep me stretched and prepared to dance, while also offering something a little bit different. What is your favorite mom moment so far? There have been plenty of amazing mom moments, but if I had to chose one, it would be when Charlotte jumped on stage at our recital and started dancing during intermission. I hopeful we can share in this passion I have for dance.

If you could describe your family in three words, what would they be? Dance. Love. Smile.

How would you describe your personal style? I would describe my personal style as shabby chic with a splash of sparkle. HA!

Who is your favorite style icon? I am obsessed with Jackie Onassis, and as far as current leading lady, I love Rachel Bilson’s style.

What’s one activity you love to do with your daughter? Other than dancing, we love bubbles. She has so much fun trying to catch them as they circle around.

What is one of your most popular go-to meals during the work week? Charlotte has a dairy/casein allergy, so meals can be a bit tricky. I am a very fussy eater as well. We both love gluten-free, dairy-free chicken nuggets and dairy free pretzels by Glutino… those pretzels are a big hit in our family, for sure! I also make what I call “Tea Chicken!” It’s organic chicken with the herbs from a coconut Thai Herbal Tea bag. Interesting, right? You simply pour the contents of the tea bag and sprinkle it on each chicken breast with a touch of olive oil. I bake it fo 30 minutes at 375, and it is DELICIOUS! It’s a healthy alternative to salt and other typical seasonings, and it’s dairy-free.

Being a mother is a big job in itself. How do you balance between career and home life? Do you have advice for other moms? It is a very tough balance that I struggled with at first. As a newborn, when she napped, I napped. Now I try to get as much done when she sleeps, and when she is awake, I incorporate as much as I can into what I need to do.  For example, If I am typing on my computer I play kids songs for her to dance with me.  When designing costumes, I have my sketch pad and she has her color wonder paper to draw with me.  My advice for other moms is just to try and get creative with ways you can involve them in whatever you are trying to do.

Music is a big part of what you do. What’s playing in your car right now? Awesome question. I love all music from Nicki Minaj to Beethoven, but right now Fiona Apple’s album, “Tidal” has been on for a while.

Three things we’d find in your handbag right now? Only three? HA! Hand sanitizer, lip gloss and mini books for Charlotte.

On date night, we’d find you where? Date night is usually at Not Your Average Joe‘s, or the Sail Loft. I am a typical wine and dine type of gal. Although, at Rose Ally Ale House, I love wings and a cold beer. Our favorite spot is Venda Ravioli in Providence… we eat al fresco, then splurge on treats to take home.

Tara’s Must-Haves:

Skin: LUSH Dream Cream is BEST for moisturizing skin, and maintaining that summer glow.

Make-up: MAC tinted moisturizer, it is light but provides even coverage.

Hair: TIGI’s Catwalk dry shampoo… It smells better than most, and works great.

Designer: Life would not be as beautiful without Chanel in the world, but for everyday shopping, I am usually at Urban Outfitters or Zara.

Food+Drink: Riccardi’s antipasto salad is my thing, and for drinks we do Trio Lounge for Martinis!
